- Note
- This page is maintained as an archival record of the course shown above, and as such, some links on this page may no longer be valid nor accessible. They are kept here as a record of the resources that were available at the time of the course offering.
- Brightspace: Where you can access private content and check your grades
- As stated in the syllabus, this course runs concurrently with its undergraduate “prequel,” CMSI 3520. As such you will also want to refer to the CMSI 3520 course website regularly, perhaps even trying out its assignments in order to learn database fundamentals firsthand

Every now and then we may use
Socrative
to ask or answer questions as a class—my Socrative room is
DONDILMU
- We continue to live in very fluid and dynamic circumstances—make sure to follow the university’s pandemic portal for the latest news, updates, and policies—to which this class must, of course, adhere
Assignments
-
Assignment 0912
Initial research survey
- The latest Seattle report on database research is a good start, but not the only one
- Some tool links that you might find useful: LaTeX, Overleaf, Mendeley, Zotero
- There’s a lot of information on LaTeX out there, and on this site I have an Annotated LaTeX Guide that summarizes some key features in a visual way
- LMU’s William H. Hannon Library maintains a Computer Science LibGuide with tips, videos, and links to sources; you’ll also find out which LMU librarian specializes in our field!
- A LibGuide on Zotero is also available
- The ACM Digital Library is a good place to start looking for more sources
-
Assignment 1003 Research
paper directed draft 1
- Based on the initial round of submissions, it looks like some students can use a refresher on how to cite work in a formal academic setting. The university library may be helpful here again, with this LibGuide on using and citing sources
- The Purdue OWL—“online writing lab”—is a much-used resource for providing guidelines and advice on effective and proper academic writing. The overall site is useful but I’d like to focus on their section on quotes. Importantly, pay attention to item 6 in the Direct Quotations section
- Another potentially useful Purdue OWL link is their section on Graduate Writing—with videos! Definitely worth a look. Specific video links include: Writing is a Conversation, Writing is a Process, Writing is a Social Endeavor, and Writing is Discipline Specific

Assignment 1024
Research paper directed draft 2
- Curious about what a real proposal looks like? The National Science Foundation (NSF) publishes abstracts of awarded proposals and research papers that emerged from them
- Their Awards Simple Search page provides a simple interface for searching these proposals
- This particular search lists projects that match the search term “databases”
- Assignment 1121 Research paper directed draft 3
- Assignment 1212 extended to 1214 Final database research paper
